I'm thrilled to start it under The Booker Albert Literary Agency. If you guys didn't know Jordy Albert and myself started our own agency. We're happily growing as well. Samantha Farkas is now an intern with us and we've also hired a new 'reader' Catherin Scully for the agency as well.

The Booker Albert Literary Agency is growing and we're very excited. I've taken on two new clients as well. Leslie Downie and Stephanie Haefner. I'm very happy to have them aboard and I look for great things in the future. I plan on updating my blog at least three times a month this year (fingers crossed).

I'm participating in the Operation Agent Ink in the Book and trying my best to drop in as much as possible.
My interest in manuscripts haven't changed much. I'm still looking for YA, Contemporary Romances, New Adult and Urban Fantasies! I've received plenty of YA time-travel novels when I mentioned I was looking for them. Now, I'm really focusing on New Adult, and YA that would attract boys! Boys need to read, too!

I'm excited to be partnered with a friend and great agent Jordy Albert and I'm thankful for each and everyone of my clients. They're amazing.

Good things to come in 2013! :)
I was on my blog and realized I hadn't posted in a while. I was thinking of something I could help my readers or authors with and came up short. So, I thought why not let the people ask questions and me answer them? Kind of like a Q&A post for anyone who has questions for literary agents, literary information or any kind of dealings with books. So, I'm leaving this post open for anyone who wants to ask me a question!
On the door of a place where I live there is a sign that reads:
"It's nice to feel important, but more important to be nice." I feel
that this needed to be said to authors. Agents are very busy people. I feel
some authors do not know the hard work and time that go into being a literary
agent. They become impatient with agents because of the time that it takes to
get an answer.

Believe me I understand. I started out submitting my
material and that is how I became a jr. agent at the Corvisiero Literary
Agency. I know the frustrations of having to wait.
However, this doesn't mean to get angry with an agent
because she/he is taking too long. Especially, when the agent takes the time
out to give you pointers to improve your novel.

A few things authors need to know.

1. Agents are super duper busy. Be patient.

2. Please do not send rude emails, we WILL get back to you.

3. When an agent gives you advice, do not get mad, take it
or not. It's up to you.

4. When an agents says 'this is not for me,' and gives you
advice, it does not mean they are interested, they are just trying to help you
out.

5. Please be respectful. It is a stressful job to be an agent
and we have tons of queries to read. Your query is not the only material we
have to read.

One of my teachers, journalism teacher, was talking about things that got on his nerves not too long ago. I got upset when he started talking about receiving queries that the author obviously didn't follow the guidelines. I thought it was stupid of him to be so picky.

Well call me Ms. Picky because I've turned into him.

Well...I wouldn't say I'm really picky, but I've noticed things that have gotten on my nerves as well. So, I thought I would write a quick blog about how authors can improve their queries, so agents won't toss them into the trash pile.

First off, READ THE GUIDELINES! It doesn't take that long to read how the agent wants their emails to be. This will help know what the agent is looking for and also shows the agent that the author cares enough about their work to check and see first.

Secondly, please, please, do not slop over your query. Make sure there are NO grammatical mistakes before sending it off. Seeing mistakes in the query shows the agent there are plenty in their work as well.

Third, this is something that rubs me the wrong way. When an author sends his query to all the agents in the same email! That is crazy! If you do not have the time to seperate the emails do not send them. And plus, not all agencies want their queries the same way! How could you possibly send it to that many agents at once! That is bonkers!

Fourth, make sure your email is pretty. Do not paste it in a big blog of text. This makes my head hurt really bad. Make some paragraphs for pete's sake. Huff.

Fifth and final, do not send three or four queries in the same email. Send one book at a time. I'm not superwoman. I need to focus on one query at a time, not three different summaries. It's confusing and not to mention lazy!

:) Those are just some things that I had on my mind. I hope this has helped a little bit!

P.S I don't normally like attachments. :)Booker's Book Thoughtshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01685139155981776516noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8258810024772887049.post-24168904341080783712011-08-10T20:24:00.000-07:002011-08-10T20:24:23.232-07:00Find what helps you...Recently I've had a writers block. Then I re-read some of my recent posts and realized that I needed to read to help myself with the block.

One of the most helpful pieces I've read is by Eudora Welty "Why I live at the P.O." It's unique and the main characters personality is different and fun than a lot of other characters I've read. Although I have read it before, just reading through it again helps me. It's funny and helps me get through my non-writing funk.

Also, any childhood book, movie or favorite novel helps a lot. I've read the Twilight Series three times, and it has helped me get into the flow of knowing what I need to come next. Any suprise, next step or plot that doesn't seem to want to flow write on paper, I get to reading any favorite novel of mine. It helps a lot.

These were just some thoughts I had on my mine during my writers block. :)

Hugs!
I was sitting here thinking to myself of something that could help authors. I've gave some YA hero help, so I thought I might give some authors help with what comes after their novel, THE ALL DREADFUL SCARY QUERY!!! AHH! Just kidding, even thought I feel like the query is just as important as your writing, don't be scared of it, defeat it!

First off, your query shouldn't be over one page! Not 4, 6, 9, just 1! Agents get so many in that they don't have time in the day to go through forty query letters with 6 pages each! Keep it simple and don't over do it.

Do Agents read them? Yes! I'm only a junior agent but I can tell you, working for Marisa Corviserio, that we do read them. But! If it is boring, untasteful or something we are not interested in, then no we toss it to the side. Your query has to bring a short synopsis to us, in a page, with a short paragraph about yourself to us, also. It's A LOT to get in one page I know, I know! But, it's possible.

At the beginning you give your hook. This is curcial. It should be something that makes the reader what to keep going. They should say after reading the first line or two "WOW I HAVE TO KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON!"

Example: (This was my hook in Fighting Destiny)

When Molly Drowns is forced back to her fearful past, she finds herself face to face with her despised but desirable destiny.
It has to be something that will stick, and will get the reader interested. Take the idea of your book and work with the theme. Something will come to you, I promise.

Secondly, you need a mini-synopsis. This is when you take your synopsis and shorten it, A LOT! Take the main points of your book and list them (this is what I did). Once listed, go over them and write them into a brief summary. It helps. Also, do not leave bad endings or unhappy endings out of your query. Because, some agents do not represent unhappy endings. If the guy dies in the end, tell us, we NEED to know. (P.S. I'm not a fan of unhappy endings.) Boo!

And finally, ta da, something a little easier! Yourself. You should know a little about yourself, or enough to know what to put. We need to know your name (duh), where you went to school, or are attending, things you love to do, and anything you've ever published. This is something that jumps out at an agent, that you have been published before, this might be publish worthy, also. :)

Another something that is important, SPELLING! That's why autocorrect was made. USE IT! Have someone (not related to you) read over it, and help with the flow of the query. Also, spell query right. :) That's a good thing to do.

Some other hints for you during your mini-synopsis. Give us the time period and location, the main characters name, their goal, their trouble they have to overcome and a conclusion. We aren't the audience, we need to know the ending. This isn't your blurb, this is for someone that needs to know the book, and the ending, to see it we want to represent you!

So...that was just some thoughts on queries. Hope it helps!

Hugs!
We do not want to wait the time we need to make sure our manuscript is perfect. I've seen it way too much in my own work and others. The thing that works best for me is writing, putting it down then picking it back up in a few weeks or months. You can go back and will see mistakes that you didn't right after writing.

Also, we also need to have someone look at it that isnt our family. As much as we love for Mom and Dad, Brother and Sister to enjoy our work, we need someone that reads a lot or does not have a relationship with us. In other words, someone who will not tell us our work is great when it actually sucks. I've heard and done this too. It's easy to do, but so much better if we don't and get an honest opinion.

Something I see way too much, is author's not wanting to get help from others, like agents or editors. Everyone likes to think that their work is great, but of course it makes sense to you! YOU WROTE IT!. My Intro to Nonfiction Creative Writing teacher broke me of that habit quickly. We need others opionions and we need to realize that not everything we write makes perfect sense to others. It's never perfect. Believe me.

These are just some things I've picked up on as I observe. We all need to stop and observe the things we do. Get others opionions and give our work some time. Stop being so impatient. Once our work is ready it will have it's time.

Hugs!
BrittanyBooker's Book Thoughtshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01685139155981776516noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8258810024772887049.post-32987615507531594602011-04-05T20:42:00.000-07:002011-04-05T20:57:52.204-07:00Things I've learned as a writerWhen writing and we think that we have an amazing piece, short story, novel or poem, we think that nothing should be changed in our work. I learned this in Intro to Creative Writing and it's a big fault we all have.

If someone is reading our work and doesnt understand something, DO NOT brush them off. We are NOT the reader of our work, we are the creator. We know what this person really meant to say, or how we picture the character acting, replying or standing. When a reader reads our work they don't see inside our head. The thing that seems SO obvious to us, does not come so obvious to them.

Think about it. Listen to someone else's opionion. Find someone that will take your work and give you an honest answer. NOT YOUR MOM. Sorry MOm's you just think everything we do is great. *Even when it's not*

Also. When you write and you have a character going to school, going to mars, going to the bathroom! I DONT CARE, make it realistic. Even a fiction novel or piece, make the reader relate to the character.

Example.

She turned and pushed me so hard I fell onto the wooden floor beneath me. I stood up and turned around to leave. Then next day.

NOOOOOOOO!!!!! What person after being pushed down, even if doing the bigger man thing wouldn't be screaming in their head!

She turned and pushed me so hard I flew back into the hard wooden floor. MY face was burning from humilation. It took every ounce of my body to lift myself up and walk the other way. I clenched my first and drug my feet the other direction.

See the difference, we can relate to the second person, because we feel that pain and humilation that person is feeling.

Just some thoughts about writing.

Hugs,
Brittany. <3Booker's Book Thoughtshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01685139155981776516noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8258810024772887049.post-38933794546961179432011-04-03T18:48:00.000-07:002011-04-03T19:04:06.775-07:00Hints, advice, and help with YA Heros. So, I went to the Dallas Forth Worth Writing Conference, as *cough cough* a junior literary agent. :)

I learned how it actually is and not to be worried or freaked out. :) Especially when you're meetin your boss for the first time in person. :)

Anywho. To the point of this blog. Which I haven't blogged lately, due to a busy school, work and reading schedule.

So, when going to this conference I learned a few things when I wasnt listening to pitches. (Man it's good to say that.) Anywho.

First off, we all know Young Adult Fiction is a good selling genre right now. So, I was going to share some advice I learned and advice from myself to you authors that are having trouble or looking for some ideas.

When writing about a hero in a book, we all think about hero yay, good looking, saves the day. NO! STOP! HALT! When we look at ourselves what do we see? Perfection! No! (Well maybe some of us do, get over yourselves) We see flaws. #1 thing we need to have in a hero is flaws. We all have them and our heros need them. It brings out a sense of realization to our characters. When we go to work or school we have obstacles we have to overcome. #2 Obstacles. Our hero needs them, what would the story be about if not? #3 No one likes a story where on the first attempt the hero wins...what would be after that? THE END. Negative Ghost Writer. We need the Hero to fall down and not make it at first. We need him to struggle and just when we think he has won, something else happens and bam, he loses it.

But! TA DA! He has another chance and wins the crown, goal, girl, position, war whateves is going on in your book.

-Flaws
-Obstacles
-A rough go.
-A ta da I made it ending. :)

We have to have these things in a Hero.

We also want Romance. Let me tell you think from my point of view. I DO NOT READ A BOOK WITHOUT A LOVE INTEREST. I hate to say it but sex sells these days and people want it badly. They want the couple to end up together and skip along happily ever after!

--Those are just some thoughts I had while sitting here reading.

--Hope they helped. :)

Hugs
BrittanyBooker's Book Thoughtshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01685139155981776516noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8258810024772887049.post-39551120383618254532010-11-29T17:03:00.001-08:002012-03-30T21:34:24.604-07:00Great NewsSo, my goal was to become a literary agent. Well, that's what I wanted to be when I graduated from College. So, the agent, Marisa Corvisiero, that is helping me get my book published offered me an incredible opportunity. I am now the Jr. Literary Agent for her! Hold your applause! :) Thank you Marisa, you are amazingly awesome! :)

I've read over two manuscripts and I am looking forward to some queries tonight! This proves several things. Prayers, they really do come true. Even if you lose your storage keys, get in an arugment at work, lose your patience with World Lit test, and get tired of school. Prayers come through just in time! :)Secondly, age is just a number. It doesnt matter if you are 18 or 81, you have a chance for your dreams to come true no matter what. Never let someone think that your accomplishments or your goals aren't as good or out of reach just because of your age. Also, this proves that if you want it, all you have to do it try for it. Try Try again.

My teacher told me that passion would get you farther in life than talent, but since you have both you are unstoppable! This made my entire week. Hearing Miss. Bloom tell me this, I just knew everything would be good! :)

So the lesson for today is 'Don't Stop Believing,' even if you are a small town girl, living in a lonely world.

Haha. Okay, a little cheesy I know, but I had to say it! :)

Hugs,
But, I feel this is just as important.

This is some words of advice to the clueless. Which, I'm not far from clueless myself. I was just slapped in the face with reality not to long ago. I mean a good hard smack right in the middle of my forehead.

So, first off. I would like to say. When I finished Fighting Destiny I was like 'hey, I better send this into some publishing company and see if they want it.' Wrong. No, I suggest, no advise anyone looking to get anything published find a good agent.

Another problem. When looking for an agent DO YOUR HOMEWORK. Seriously, yes, I know it sounds boring as crap, but it's not. For myself I looked for an agency looking for immortal series, and I fond TA DA "Lori Perkins Agency," yay! So, after sending my query in by email I recieved a email that night from Marisa. Yeah yeah! She's a boss. Which, asked for a synopsis and a partial. Then, wait for it..... the entire manuscript. Okay, so I was thinking what's next presenting it to the company. Snicker Snicker. No silly.

Next step. Perfection. Being who I am, I have SO MANY GRAMMER MISTAKES. And that is the stage I am at now. editing. Letting Marisa read over to see if I need a professional editor. If you're a new writer I will say that you will do a lot of WAITING. But, believe me trust your agent and it will be rewarded. I know this. Well, I'm getting there at least.

So. Another important thing to add. Make a beast of a query letter, which there are steps to that online. I'm not an expert to tell you this, but pull your agent (whoever is reading it) in by making a beautiful and perfect first sentence. You need something that will pull them into your world, and spit them back out when they are finished reading, but they will be thristy for what happens next. HAHA, Thirsty like a vampire.

Anywho. Just some thoughts I had on my mind while I was supposed to be doing my Meterology Homework. Oh, well the weather can wait.

Kisses,

Brittany BooBooker's Book Thoughtshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01685139155981776516noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8258810024772887049.post-11094892645740046242010-10-07T19:03:00.000-07:002010-10-07T19:04:04.033-07:00My thoughts on how I write!I've recently been working on my third novel "Fallen," which is the third in the series. But, I thought I might share some things that I've been notcing about myself and my writing. I know what I'm going to write better if I read over what I have, then stop, get out the journal my mother bought me and write down step by step the things I want to happen. And, as I fill it out, I find things that I want to put in there. Also, if you read "Characters and Viewpoint,' you will read about a thing writers call 'the bible,' no it's not the actually bible. But, it's a bible for your book. Basically, you write down everything that happens, things you can't remember, things like hair color, eye color, what color shirt, and things you need to remember. It has helped me SO much with my writing. I know things I need to put in there and things I need to remember.

I'm in a intro to creative writing class, right now, and we are writing poetry, which I can't stand. I LOVE to read the kids around me and their work, and of course the famous work out there, but me NO WAY, am I a poet. Everything I try and write is awfully corny and everything rhymes. But, this boy in my class today read his poem, and it touched my heart. I mean, it was obviously very hard for him to read and write. But, it was emotional, passionate, and full of hate. That's when it dawned on me. When I write my scenes about Molly and Zane fighting, I look deep, deep down into my past and my regrets (don't act like you don't have them) and I search. I search ever inch of my heart, for the anger, romance, hatred or anything I need. I do the same thing as this boy, just in a different way. Instead of expressing myself in a poetic number, I put my emotions into my characters.

Oh, and I secretly watch the people around me. HA. I really do. Like today I watched as my teacher became VERY excited over this boys poem. She truely loves it. Also, another person who gets nervous and crosses his legs and shakes his boot on his knee, and others who watch everyone all the time (maybe he was watching everyone for the same reason as me) but his eyes darted as if he was a theif waiting for a clear break, but, I watch the things around me. I watche the silent people, the loud people, and try to see why they do the things they do. Becareful I'M WATCHING!

The last thing I do when I am having a writers block, which I do this constanly anyways, but especially when I am having trouble writing, I READ. Reading other's work, and seeing how it flows so smoothly, you see what you are lacking, you see the things that transends paragraph to paragraph.

-- Read your work, watch and read.

BrittanyBooker's Book Thoughtshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01685139155981776516noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8258810024772887049.post-40264387558665507652010-08-16T14:04:00.000-07:002010-08-16T14:07:33.082-07:00Next Big Thing!I have completed "Lost," which is the second novel to the Fighting Destiny Series. Now, I am started on "Fallen," which is the third. I've been busy with school and work, and also getting my new apartment settled but I try to work on it when I can. Trough editing Fighting Destiny for now. My agent and I are trying to get the manuscript perfect before representing it to the publishing company! :) Which is exciting. Also, my brother and I have joined forces. We are working on a novel with will be two or three, not determined yet, novels. It will be called Damned and it is about fallen angels, with a big twist! :) So, just going to write up on a update.

Thank you!
BrittanyBooker's Book Thoughtshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01685139155981776516noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8258810024772887049.post-84435692125436886032010-07-12T19:35:00.000-07:002010-07-12T19:41:50.402-07:00EditingWow, when I started blogging I never realized how hard it would be with school, work and writing to keep up with it. I haven't blogged since May 31. That a pretty good while ago. But, I have been busy. I've recently found an apartment with two other girls, which we are moving into at the end of this month. Im soooo excited! Its two second both from my school and work! yay. But, to the most important thing going on in my life right now, Fighting Destiny. My agent gave me a edited copy of some of my book, showing me what I need to look for. So, there I went. Searching over my writing, for grammer mistakes, spelling mistakes, and things that didnt quite make much since. My Dad then follows after me, correcting. Its so much easier for others to find mistakes in your work. I remember last semester when I had my first Creative Writing class, (nonfiction). I would want to cry when we would come on the days where we had to read over other peoples work then hear what they had to say about mine. There would be marks all up and down my page, even though I came out with an A in there, it hurt. But, I wanted to say Thank You, Miss. Payne. For correcting my stories, and thankful enough I was voted to be part of our College's Magizine "The Foliate Oak." I learned more from my Creative Writing teacher than anyone before in English. THank you again. But, I guess this is off for now. I'm editing, then sending it to my agent for reviews, then off to represent it! Can't wait. :)Booker's Book Thoughtshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01685139155981776516noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8258810024772887049.post-57486074314811727892010-05-31T10:47:00.000-07:002010-05-31T11:06:42.080-07:00Keeping it going....

Writing, writing, writing. I feel like my life has been overcomed with words, typing and also writing down things on napkins at work when I get an idea. When we aren't busy of course. :) But, summer I starts tomorrow, and I will have math class, business speaking, work, and writing. But, its strange, no matter what is going on in my life I find a way to write. I find a way to write, because I love it. I feel myself getting lost in my characters. Sometimes I think my boyfriend should speed off with ultraspeed into the darkness of the night. Ha. Fighting Destiny is a story that I'm sure girls will love. I'm not to sure about boys, their are some boys that love love stories, so probably some will enjoy it. There are definitely some action scenes in there, but more in my second one that I am working on now. I've asked my agent if it would be okay to put a short section of my book on my blog or my fanpage on facebook, but I just done that, so I will know soon. I just wanted to let people know a little bit of how it will read. But, if that doesnt happen, hopefully y'all will get to see it on the shelves soon. Eventhough, I've read it can take a long time to get a book published, so, it might be a few months, I'll keep you guys updated on everything.

- Love, BrittanyBooker's Book Thoughtshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01685139155981776516noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8258810024772887049.post-71256223252213334782010-05-05T16:52:00.000-07:002010-05-05T17:07:17.055-07:00Thoughts, Advice, Interest, and thanks. To the wondeful people in my life. Hopefully my Book will make it far! Finally, I got my first final out of the way. Now, all is left is Math, my most dreaded enemy, number and letters. But, on the other hand. I have no classes today or tomorrow, only a study session, so I have TONS of time to write. My most favorite thing to do in my entire life. WRITE, WRITE, WRITE. I know, I know, tons of people love to write. But, when I set down and day dream in class, I wonder how could ANYONE love to do this as much as me. But, I'm not in denial. I know they are out there, wondering, writing, pondering, and in the process of their next victim, princess, dragon, vampire or werewolf they are fixing to put on paper. Sometimes I feel like I have ink or lead in my blood. That is flowing out toward my computer, paper, or even my I-pod. I find it really useful. While I help my mom clean, I constantly get ideas on how my book series is going to turn out, so I quickly pull out my I-pod, press notepad, and start typing my idea on my keyboard. Yes, I am obsessed if you were wondering. Can I spell, no, do I know a lot of fancy words others do not, no, do I have my degree yet, no. But, I do have an imagination. An imagination that is dying to get out, dying to work its way out on to my laptop, I-pod or notepad. I love what I do, and I continue to do it as far as I can.

Advice-- "What does she know?" "She has never published a book, or anything."
Thats probably what you are thinking right now. But, I have had a short story published, and articles in my College and Home Newspaper. But, no, thats not where my heart is.
I'll tell you this, I have had the tourment of trying to find an agent. On my second try I recieved a I want to read more, that lead to more, than to "I would like to represent you." But, that first rejection letter, stung my heart. I cried, after my mom read the letter to me, and after I talked to everyone. In my room, in my bed, I cried. I have worked so hard on my first book. Staying up late thinking, "what would people reading this think?" Although, I've learned if you write it, because you enjoy it, someone out there will like it. Plus, I'm a young female adult, I know what girls like. Heck, I am one.

So, just when you think your life is over after a rejection. Do your HOMEWORK, as my agent calls it. Look up whatever your book is about, and look up agents with that interest. Dont give up! Please, truth is, I would probably love what you are writing, along with everyone else.

So, at the end of the day, my thoughts are scattered, from advice, school work, my book and my life.

I'd like to say Thank you God, for giving me the patience I never had until now. Thank you to my family, for the hours of tourment you suffered from me telling you about my book. Thanks Greg, my boyfriend, that I'm sure wants to choke me, because all I talk about is the guys in my book. (Sorry babe, nothing personal) And last but not least, Marisa, my agent. Without your interest in my book. I'd still be sending in query letters.

Thanks guys.Booker's Book Thoughtshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01685139155981776516noreply@blogger.com2
